Oorulai – The One Pot Meal: A Liberative Tradition
Oorulai, the One Pot Meal, is a significant liberative practice initiated by Rev. Dr. James Theophilus Appavoo, a former faculty member of Tamilnadu Theological Seminary (TTS). Known for his deep commitment to the rural masses, Dr. Appavoo was profoundly inspired by the simplicity and communal life of village communities.
During one of his Rural TECCA (Theological Education for Christian Commitment and Action) programs in a village, he was teaching the congregation about the Lord’s Prayer, emphasizing that God is our Parent, and we are all His children—one family under God. During the session, a ten-year-old village girl innocently asked him:
“Parattai, what did you have for lunch?”
When he replied that he had delicious biryani, the girl questioned:
“You just said God is our Parent and we are all one family. Then how can our Parent, God, give you biryani while I only have leftover porridge (kanji) from the previous day?”
This simple yet profound question deeply moved Dr. Appavoo, making him reflect on economic disparity and food justice. How could a just and loving God allow such inequality? This realization led him to initiate the Oorulai One Pot Meal, a communal practice that embodies solidarity with the rural poor.
Oorulai Festival at TTS
To remember the struggles of village communities, the Oorulai Festival is observed at TTS on the fourth Wednesday of every month. On this day the community members prepare a simple meal of kanji (porridge), a staple of rural life. A procession moves across the campus with drum beats, singing, and dancing, inviting everyone to join. The gathered community sings, prays, and thanks God before sharing the meal. Salt is added to the kanji, symbolizing the shared life and struggles of the rural people.
This tradition serves as a powerful reminder of the realities of food injustice and challenges future pastors to work towards the upliftment of marginalized communities. The Oorulai Festival continues to inspire the TTS community to walk alongside the poor, ensuring that justice and equality remain central to Christian ministry.
