About
Dr. Gideon S. S. Paulraj is a biblical scholar and theologian with a keen research interest in the intersection of social justice, food ethics, and the New Testament, particularly within the Gospel of Luke and Acts. He holds a PhD from the University of Gloucestershire (2021), where his research focused on a social-scientific reading of Lucan meals. His academic journey includes an MTh in New Testament from the Senate of Serampore (2012), an MA in Religion and Philosophy from Madurai-Kamaraj University (2010), a BD in Theology and Biblical Studies from Union Biblical Seminary, Pune (2004), and a BA in English Literature from American College, Madurai (1999).
Dr. Paulraj has contributed significantly to biblical scholarship, particularly in the areas of food justice and hospitality. His book, Food Justice and Hospitality in Luke-Acts: A Historical and Contemporary Reflection (Pickwick Publications, 2023), explores the socio-economic implications of meals in Luke-Acts and their relevance for contemporary discussions on justice and inclusion. He has also authored Rehumanising the Dehumanized: Lucan Jesus and the Reversals on Social Values (2021) and several articles in theological journals.
A frequent speaker at international conferences, Dr. Paulraj has presented research on topics such as hunger and destitution in Luke-Acts at the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) International Meetings and the DARE Global Forum. His most recent work examines the socio-economic identity of the ptōchoi (destitute) in Luke-Acts.
Dr. Paulraj’s scholarship engages deeply with biblical interpretation, social ethics, and contemporary challenges, making his work a valuable contribution to both academia and the church.
